Understanding Hepatitis : Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diagnosis And Treatment

Like all other internal organs, the liver performs various important functions. Some of these functions include storing nutrients that other body parts might need at a later time as well as filtering toxins from your body.

However, certain diseases hinder the liver from performing such functions. One of the most well-known diseases is hepatitis. This is a condition where there is an inflammation in the liver.

The Symptoms

A patient with hepatitis often displays several symptoms. However, these symptoms may not appear until your liver is damaged already. You should understand that since hepatitis develops in a slow manner, you might not notice these symptoms immediately. Here are several symptoms that are associated with hepatitis:

  • having yellow eyes or skin, usually known as jaundice
  • feeling pain in the abdomen
  • losing your appetite
  • releasing pale stool and/or dark urine
  • fatigue
  • unexplained weight loss
  • symptoms similar to influenza

The Causes

Generally, there are three possible causes of hepatitis. First, a patient acquires this through a viral infection. This is where a person consumes contaminated foods or drinks, or gets into contact with bodily fluids of an infected patient.

Second, this can be the secondary result of chemical abuse. These include consuming too much alcohol, taking in drugs, and also taking in certain medications.

Third, it can be an autoimmune disease. This is where your immune system attacks your liver after mistaking it as a harmful body.

The Types

Hepatitis is classified into 5 types, namely A, B, C, D, and E. In most cases, the types B and C are the ones that become chronic illnesses.

The Diagnosis

Once you notice the symptoms, it is best to consult your doctor immediately. He will then perform several tests to diagnose whether or not you have hepatitis. Some of these tests may include:

  • Physical Examination
  • Liver Function Tests and Blood Tests
  • Ultrasound
  • Liver Biopsy
  • The Treatments

Depending on the type of hepatitis that you have, the treatment options might vary. For instance, Type E hepatitis just cures on its own after imposing changes on your lifestyle, like avoiding alcohol. Types B, C, and D usually require antiviral medications. As for Type A, vaccination and dietary changes can help.
